Italian Folk: Pattacini, Verdi, Gualerzi (S2 | E89)

An interview with Francesco Gualerzi and Fausto Armonti from Emiglia Romagna, Italia

Francesco and Fausto have been friends since childhood. They played music together from the start, and were child stars throughout Italy. Francesco then became the lead singer for the Italian band Nomadi, which is still in business today. He left that band and began a career focused on jazz and Italian folk music.

More recently Francesco formed Officina Del Battagliero, a band devoted to the work of Tienno Pattacini, a notable composer from the Emiglia Romagna region of Italy. (see notes below about this remarkable man).

I reached these two fascinating men in Francesco’s recording studio in Italy for this remote interview. This episode represents this Lester the Nightfly show so well. I could have never guessed that LTNF could lead us this far into the world of music.

Tienno Pattacini

Tienno Pattacini (Barco, February 16, 1908 – Barco, June 24, 1978) was an Italian musician, composer and lyricist.

For some compositions, he used the pseudonyms Cabajo and Cabagio.

In the 1930s he formed his first dance orchestra.

In 1933 he composed the famous Battagliero waltz for alto saxophone, a piece that he will record for the first time for the Columbia record label, in 1937 on 78 rpm.

He enrolled in the SIAE as a Composer and Author of texts and later founded the Edizioni Musicali Pattacini where he deposited all his songs, sometimes also using the pseudonym Cabagio.

In his long career, he composed hundreds of songs: waltzes, mazurkas, polkas, tangos, sambas, rumbas, beguines and songs interpreted before and after the war by the most famous singers, such as Luciano Tajoli, Giorgio Consolini, Corrado Lojacono, Carla Stella and others.

He has two sons Iller Pattacini and Imer, who are also musicians.

In Italiano – Tienno Pattacini

Tienno a sedici anni viene scritturato dal famoso, a quei tempi, Concerto Cantoni di Mezzani in provincia di Parma come primo Quartino (Piccolo in Mib).

Negli anni ’30 forma la sua prima Orchestra da ballo.

Nel 1933 compone il famoso valzer Battagliero per sassofono contralto, brano che inciderà per la prima volta per l’etichetta discografica Columbia, nel 1937 su 78 giri.

Si iscrive alla SIAE come Compositore e Autore di testi e in seguito fonda la Edizioni Musicali Pattacini dove depositerà tutti i suoi brani, talvolta usando anche lo pseudonimo Cabagio.

Nella sua lunga carriera compose centinaia di brani: valzer, mazurche, polche, tanghi, sambe, rumbe, beguine e canzoni interpretate nell’ante e primo dopoguerra dai più famosi cantanti, quali Luciano Tajoli, Giorgio Consolini, Corrado Lojacono, Carla Stella e altri.

Ha due figli Iller Pattacini e Imer, anch’essi musicisti.

Giudicato il Capostipite e Portabandiera del Folclore Emiliano, è conosciuto e eseguito in tutta Italia e all’estero per le sue tante composizioni per Fisarmonica.

Tutte le sue composizioni sono state da lui incise per le più importanti etichette discografiche: Columbia, Odeon, Carisch, Fonit Cetra, Vis Radio, su dischi 78 giri e solo negli anni ’50 e ’60 verranno pubblicate ristampe in Vinile 45 giri e LP 33 giri.

Molti dischi incisi su 78 giri sono andati perduti o difficilmente reperibili, ma in buona parte sono in possesso del figlio Imer nella sua discoteca privata.

Nel 1938 ha scoperto il noto fisarmonicista Barimar, che proprio con l’orchestra di Tienno effettua le prime incisioni.

Nel 1964 scrive la musica (su testo di Mogol di Hip, Hip, Hip, Hurrah!, incisa da Ombretta Colli, mentre nel 1966 è l’autore del testo di Voi non sapete, su musica del figlio Iller, incisa da Milva. In SIAE sono depositati a suo nome 387 brani musicali
